Readers’ Workshop is three pronged:

3rd grade artMath

Houghton Mifflin has developed its program to meet the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. The third grade Houghton Mifflin math is organized into eight units. Each unit consists of two to four chapters related to the big mathematical ideas of the unit. Chapter checkpoints and assessment make the teacher and parents aware of the mystery of material by each child. There are immediate and focused remediation and intervention tools.

Units in the program are the following:

Place Value and Money

Students will extend understanding of place value to hundred thousands. Students will understand that if dollar amounts are written a dollar sign and decimal are needed.

Addition and subtraction

Students will learn that when adding multi-digit numbers it is important to have the correct alignment of numbers. Students will also understand regrouping in out base ten system.

Data and Probability

Students will collect and record data using line plots, pictographs, bar graphs and tables.

Multiplication and Division

Students will practice basic facts and will multiply numbers of different amounts. They also will learn about the Communitive Property of Multiplication.

Measurement

Students will measure the nearest half-inch and explore the metric system.

Geometry

Students will understand the various geometric figures such as the triangle.

Fractions and Decimals

Students will learn to understand what fractions and decimals mean and how much to add and subtract them.

Multiplication and Division by 1-digit numbers

We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with a new math program!  We very much appreciate your support as we work with new text books, technology and other materials to help support our understanding of third grade math skills. For additional information go to www.eduplace.com.
